We get this question frequently from women who are either trying to conceive or are just letting nature take its course and not using birth control.

We, like most salons will not treat a person if they know they are pregnant or if they are actively trying to get pregnant.  If a couple is not using birth control then they are sort of in the trying to get pregnant, but it could be this month, it could be in two years.

The good news is that there isn’t any proof that laser hair removal can cause any harm to a brand new embryo.  The embryo is deep inside the mothers body and the laser light only penetrates the skin a few millimeters, so it would never reach the embryo.  At 9 months though a baby could be turned such that its eyes were facing towards the tummy and if laser was done directly on the mothers tummy right over the eye, then the baby may see a flash, but it would probably still be too far away to cause any harm.

It is the liability and it is in fact the insurance companies who will not let us treat pregnant women just because we live in a litigious society you could have a baby born with a birth defect and the lawyer will go back and sue everyone who touched the mother claiming that they caused the problem. In reality though, laser is just an intense light and isn’t absorbed by the body nor does it travel through the body like chemicals, it is just a bright light.

So to answer the question. If you’re not actively trying to get pregnant, but find out that you are pregnant, don’t worry. Just take 9 months off and resume your laser hair removal treatments after the birth.
