‘Organic’ doesn’t quite mean the same thing whether you’re in the food or in the cosmetic industry. To consumers it can mean ‘natural’, ‘green’, ‘chemical free’, or ‘found at Whole Foods’. But according to this article, the US organics market is completely confused.
http://www.cosmeticsdesign-europe.com/Products-Markets/Study-highlights-confusion-in-US-organics-market.
Primarily because there is no industry-agreed meaning for terms like ‘organic’ or ‘natural’. Unlike the farming industry, these terms are not regulated for cosmetics. Companies can pretty much claim anything is natural or organic.
For example, imagine a body wash formula. It contains all kinds of synthetic surfactants, fragrances, preservatives and colors. But it also contains 85-90% water. A company might simply claim “90% organic or natural” and be telling the truth. Certainly, this isn’t in the spirit of what people believe organic to mean, but it is within the law.
Are organic products better?
Incidentally, natural or organic cosmetic products don’t really provide any added benefit for consumers. Most companies are just fooling you when they say their products are natural. What isn’t? And for companies like Burt’s Bees who strive to make ‘organic’ or ‘all-natural’ products, their finished products are mostly functionally inferior to more mainstream products. This is the real trade-off of natural or organic products. That and an incredibly higher cost for an inferior product.
Remember cosmetics are not food. No one has ever proven there is a benefit to ‘organically’ derived cosmetics.

Take the test: Which is the leading cause of Cellulite?
a) Heredity
b) Hormones
c) Smoking
d) Lack of exercise
e) Poor diet
f) None of the above
g) All of the above
Answer: g) All of the above.
Cellulite is a very common condition, especially among women. Women are basically genetically and hormonally predisposed to cellulite. Smoking makes it worse. Lack of exercise and poor diet (fatty food and little drinking) may enhance the phenomenon.
What is Cellulite?
Rigid fibers form the fat chambers. When fat cells are enlarged, the rigid fibers push toward the soft tissue of the dermis, causing the rough surface appearance described as “orange peel,” “mattress,” or “cottage cheese.”
The ideal VelaShape patient is someone with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of less than 30 who falls under Cellulite Classification Levels 1 and 2. Ask your doctor to see if you’re a candidate for VelaShape treatments.
The Nurnberger-Muller cellulite classification scale
| Stage 1 – no dimpling while the patient is standing or lying down, but the pinch test reveals the “orange peel” appearance. |
Stage 2 – “orange peel” dimpling appears spontaneously when standing up, but not when lying down. |
Stage 3 – “orange peel” dimpling appears spontaneously both when standing up and lying down. |

Laser hair removal can be performed throughout the year. What is important though is to minimize sun exposure on the treated areas several weeks before and after each treatment. With that said, you are probably better off during the winter months since you are outdoors less. The exception would be if you are planning a tropical vacation during the winter, then you’d want to make sure to use lots of sunscreen and to schedule your laser treatments at least several weeks before and after your vacation. Another exception would be outdoor sports in the winter and laser hair removal on the face. The sun reflecting off the snow at high altitudes can be extremely intense.

The Benefits and Risks of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is mechanical exfoliation that removes the uppermost layer of dead skin cells from the face, chest and hands. For best results, it is recommended you get a series of treatments and use in conjunction with anti-aging skin care products.
The price for a single microdermabrasion treatment usually ranges from $75 – $100. With a series, you might get one free. Microdermabrasion takes about 20-30 minutes and there’s no down-time for the skin to recover. That’s why it’s also sometimes called a “lunchtime peel.”
Benefits of Microdermabrasion
* Microdermabrasion leaves skin with a fresher, more glowing look.
* Microdermabrasion diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, and coarse textured skin.
* Microdermabrasion makes it easy for high-tech skin care products to actually penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and help build collagen, which gives skin its youthful appearance.
Other Names for Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is also known as particle resurfacing, power peel, derma-peel or Parisian peel.
How Microdermabrasion Works
Microdermabrasion uses a powerful device to spray microcrystals of aluminum dioxide (corundum powder) across the skin’s surface. The aluminum dioxide is a very fine, very hard, sand-like material that blasts away the uppermost layer of dead skin cells on the skin’s epidermis.
Microdermabrasion can be uncomfortable around the sensitive tissue of the mouth and nose, but should not be painful. After the treatment, the technician vacuums away the traces of the corundum powder.
Cautions on Microdermabrasion
*Check on the training of the person who is going to give you the microdermabrasion treatment. Results depend in part on their expertise.
*Make sure all traces of the aluminum dioxide is removed from your skin.
*Apply sunscreen and stay out of the sun after your treatment. Along with the dead skin cells, you have removed some of your protection.
*Microdermabrasion is not recommended for sensitive skin, skin that easily reddens (called couperous), or skin with acne breakouts.
*Aging skin is already thin. Overdoing microdermabrasion treatments can make it even thinner.

Excessive hair or hair in unwanted places has been a long-standing problem for both men and women. Traditional methods of hair removal have proven to be slow, temporary, and oftentimes painful, and electrolysis hair removal treatments can be very time consuming. However, people can now experience a convenient and permanent alternative by way of laser hair removal treatment, which allows for quick, satisfying results.
Laser Hair Removal Benefits
Laser hair removal is not only extremely effective in permanently reducing unwanted hair, but it is also extremely convenient. Smaller areas can be treated in 10 minutes or less, and patients are able to return to normal activities immediately. Additionally, most patients find that the many benefits far outweigh the minor risks associated with laser hair removal treatment.
Permanent Laser Hair Removal Results
Patients enjoy a permanent reduction in unwanted hair and smooth, soft skin after laser hair removal treatments. While results can, in some instances, slowly fade and necessitate touch-up laser hair removal treatment sessions, they are typically necessary only once a year or less. However, most patients experience long-lasting, beautiful results.
Effective and Convenient Treatment
The appeal of laser hair removal stems from its effectiveness, efficiency, and convenience. Laser hair removal can easily treat large areas of hair growth in a relatively short amount of time. For example, an entire back can be treated through laser hair removal and optimum results can be achieved in as little as an hour.
The treatment is much more efficient than shaving or tweezing on a regular basis. While at-home self-treatment may be cheaper, it also takes much more time and effort to remove hair than it does with laser hair removal. Also, tweezing and shaving do not offer permanent results like laser hair removal does.
Laser hair removal also makes it possible to achieve satisfying results without the pain associated with other types of treatments like waxing. While people who undergo waxing often describe the treatment as repeated burning sensations, laser hair removal involves only minor discomfort.
Lastly, laser hair removal provides excellent results with less risk of skin irritation than the use of depilatories, or hair removal creams. The main active chemical in depilatory creams can actually melt away skin cells, causing mild to severe skin irritation. And, while hair removal creams can provide good results, they are only temporary.

There are a number of different machines which fall under the broad category of Laser Hair Removal.
1- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
Machines: EpiLight, PhotoDerm, Quantum, Aculight, or Vasculight.
The capabilities of each of these machines vary. EpiLight is the most specific and advanced for hair removal. PhotoDerm is the original machine developed for successfully treating facial Rosacea, facial blood vessels, leg veins, and other blood vessels. EpiLight is a specialized improvement of PhotoDerm developed to specifically treat unwanted hair. Ultimate Light™ pulsed light can safely and effectively treat ALL skin types ranging from white to black. In general though IPL devices will have a more painful experience because there is a broad spectrum of light energy delivered to the skin.
2 – The Diode Laser (800nm or 810 nm wavelength)
In my opinion, the Diode laser is the next most useful hair removal light source.
The Diode laser systems include: SLP 1000, F1 Diode, Light Sheer, MeDioStar, LaserLite, Epistar and Apex 800.
The Diode laser’s longer wavelength of light thereby penetrates into the hair follicle without causing as much epidermal injury as the Ruby or the. This Diode laser can be used on darker skin colors than the Ruby or Alexandrite.
3 – Nd: Yag (1064 nm wavelength)
The Nd: Yag laser systems include: Gentle Yag, CoolGlide, Medlite IV, Varia, Athos, Lyra, and Image. This is the first of the true lasers.
The Nd: Yag is capable of treating all six skin colors. It can be more painful on lighter skins, but is more effective on darker skins.
4 – Ruby (694 nm wavelength)
The Ruby laser systems include: RubyStar and Palomar E2000.
Learn More About Ruby. Ruby lasers were some of the original lasers for hair removal but the Alexandrite and ND:Yag are far superior.
5 -Alexandrite (755nm wavelength)
The Alexandrite laser systems include: GentleLASE, Apogee, and EpiTouch Plus.
Alexandrite lasers are very effective for fair to mid skin tones, though some manufactures say they will work for very dark skin the ND:Yag is preferred there. For the lighter skin tones with dark hair this is often your best choice and the Candela GentleLASE, which we use, is considered the best hair removal laser available. It is very effective and its patented cooling technology makes for the most comfortable experience.

At a Glance:
Newly published research shows that adults with high fiber intakes are less likely to gain weight and inches around the waist.
It is known that dietary fiber may play a role in obesity prevention. The role that different individual fiber sources play in weight change is less certain. In a recent paper published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers investigated the association of total dietary fiber, cereal fiber, and fruit and vegetable fiber with changes in weight and waist circumference.
The prospective cohort study included 89,432 European participants, aged 20–78 years, who were initially free of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Participants were followed for an average of 6.5 years. Adjustments were made for follow-up duration, dietary variables, and baseline anthropometric, demographic, and lifestyle factors.
Total fiber was inversely associated with weight and waist circumference change during the study period. For a 10 gram/day higher total fiber intake, there was an estimated 39 g/year weight loss and waist circumference decreased by 0.08 cm/year. A 10 gram/day fiber intake from cereals results in 77 g/year weight reduction and 0.10 cm/year reduction in waist circumference. Fruit and vegetable fiber was not associated with weight change but had a similar effect on waist circumference as total and cereal fiber intake.
Over a period of 6.5 years, weight gain and increases in waist circumference would be expected in typical adults. The findings of this research may support a beneficial role of higher intake of dietary fiber, especially cereal fiber, in prevention of weight and waist circumference gain.
