Epilation is removal of the entire hair, including the part below the skin, and is therefore longer-lasting. Methods include waxing, sugaring, epilation devices, lasers, threading, intense pulsed light or electrology. Hair is also sometimes removed by plucking with tweezers.
Typically you’ll hear of “Epilator” devices. These devices are similar to electric razors, except instead of a cutting plade on a rotary head, they have rows of tweezers which can pull hairs out by the root.
Advantages: Good for legs and arms . Can last from several days to several weeks.
Disadvantages: Can be hard to use on backs of legs. Skin must be pulled tight to avoid pinching . Some find it uncomfortable, especially on sensitive areas. Harder to use on fine hairs. Hair must be grown long enough for tweezers to grasp. Plucking hairs can lead to irritated skin and ingrown hairs.
If your goal is temporary hair removal then epliators, waxing, etc may be for you, but if you want permanent laser hair removal, then laser hair removal is your best bet.

Dec. 23–New Year’s resolutions for many Americans will mean the latest diets and gym memberships.
But losing weight and keeping it off might be as much about the psychological struggles as the physical changes.
“Some people say losing weight is in the mind,” said Judith Horvath, director of the psychotherapy training program at Texas Tech’s Health Sciences Center.
The HSC psychiatrist said giving yourself a mental workout can complement healthful eating and exercise regimens.
“I think they need to go hand-in-hand,” she said.
Psychological feelings make the holiday season one of the worst times of the year to embark on a program, Horvath said.
“Food can be used as emotional nourishment and to calm anxieties,” she said. “The holidays stir up unfulfilled longings in people. People are reminded of the things they are missing out on.”
But other emotions make losing weight hard year-round, Horvath said. Feelings of depression, a loss of control, rationalizing weight gain and low self-esteem can make losing weight seem like an impossible task, local experts said.
“Some people don’t think they can allow themselves to look their best because they feel like they don’t deserve to be a more attractive person,” Horvath said.
Most of the morbidly obese patients treated at Lubbock’s Advanced Bariatric Surgery Center are depressed, said David Syn, a bariatric surgeon who opened the practice in 2002. Many of them give up the antidepressants when they shed their extra pounds, he said.
They might also feel like they’re losing a friend, like they must reach their ideal weight to succeed, or like they’ve already failed.
“If you look at the laundry list of diets they’ve tried on their own and failed, that can’t have a positive impact on someone’s psyche,” Syn said.
Syn helps his patients overcome their overeating through surgery, counseling and education, he said.
“One of the great misunderstandings about what I do is that it’s just surgery,” said Syn, who spends hours with his patients before surgery and follows most for many years after.
“We are empowering people to take back their lives,” he said.
Horvath said people striving for less dramatic weight loss can benefit from including family and friends in the process or talking to a professional.
The Texas Tech HSC Psychiatry Clinic provides a free counseling program for patients planning to lose weight, she said.
People should try to find distractions that help them stay away from food, Horvath said.
“They have to find out how to deal with the loss of satisfaction eating provides them,” she said. “It’s about exchanging the reward of food for the reward of achieving their goals.”

We answer this question several times a week. Many people think that after one laser hair removal treatment that all the hair will be gone forever. Unfortunately this isn’t the case.
First a bit of hair biology 101 – every hair on your body goes through three phases.
- First is the growth stage. In this stage the hair is actively growing and getting longer. In this phase there is rich blood supply in the hair follicle to feed the hair growth. It is the length of this phase which determines the length of the hair. On your scalp this phase can be prolonged which is the reason you can grow long hair, whereas on your arms this phase can be much shorter, so the hair grows less than an inch, then stops.
- The second phase is where the hair stops growing. the blood supply pulls back from the follicle, but the hair follicle holds onto the hair for some time.
- Finally the follicle lets go of the hair and it falls out. The follicle will remain in this dormant stage for some time, then the blood supply will return and will start growing a new hair.
The process above repeats over and over for a single hair follicle.
Now lets look at how the laser works. The laser light penetrates the skin and encounters the dark hair in the follicle and heats it up. If it is in the growth phase the blood supply is in close proximity to the hair in the follicle and the blood is heated and cauterized. This then disables the hair follicle so it can’t grow another hair. But if the follicle is in the 2nd or 3rd phases above, then the hair heats up, but the blood supply isn’t there so nothing happens.
At any one time you may have about 20% of your hair follicles in the growth phase. So if you did laser once, you might reduce the amount of hair by 20%. Do it twice and you might thin it by 40%, etc. So in theory five treatments should eliminate all the hair. But in reality the timing of your hair growth cycle is variable and unknown, so one follicle might sneak its growth phase in between two treatments. So then typically seven treatments will be required.

This the question everyone has, especially in today’s economy. You’ll find that for a given region that
prices can vary widely and those with the highest prices usually use a high pressure sales tactics. I won’t name names, but if you call a nationwide laser clinic chain, and they refuse to give you prices over the phone or show prices on their website, then there is a good reason why – They are outrageously high priced. Here in Denver you’ll find the clinics downtown (Cherry Creek) will charge much more than those just 10-20 miles away. So if you want to save some money, consider a short drive.
You’ll find that most clinics will have a price for an area, such as back, underarm, bikini, etc. For example $80 for bikini line. Some will charge a flat rate for a zone. For example $70 per zone. The definition of a zone can be confusing. For example a bikini line may be two zones (Right & Left??) Thighs might be 4 zones (R/L front & back?)
You’ll also find discounts for packages. It typically takes about 7 treatments to clear an area. So they’ll offer a package which includes 7 treatments but for less than paying for 7 individual treatments. For example $400 for a package. With packages most clinics will require payment up front or may spread it over a couple of payments.
You can also save money by bundling several areas into one package, for example have your bikini line and underarms done at the same time. For men maybe chest and back. If finances permit, get as much done as one time as you can afford and you can usually get a discount.
Another variable, especially for men, is how much hair there is. Most clinics will have a price for say Men’s Back. But when you come in for the consultation if you only have say hair across the shoulders and upper back, but nothing on the lower back, then you may get a discount. The back price is based on a full back of hair like a bear.
Hair color can also make a difference. There are some lasers which will treat blond, white, gray, or light red hair, but these lighter hair colors take more treatments than brown or black hair so often you’ll find a slightly higher price up front, or you may buy a package of 7 treatments then find you have to buy an additional two to three treatments at the single treatment price.
Also ask about touch up prices. After you’ve completed your package you may still need an occasional touch up. Some will treat the entire area for a discount (we charge say $25 for underarm touch up vs $75 for the initial treatment) others will charge an office fee of say $15 then a dollar or two per pulse.
You also want to gauge the care you’ll receive by your initial phone call. Do they cut you off and tell you to go to the website, or do they spend time with you on the phone? Understand that smaller clinics may not have a receptionist so if they are with a client they may need to be shorter but should offer to call back, or if you get voice mail, leave a message and see who calls back. It is surprising, we hear of people who call other clinics and leave a message and they never call back.
As you can see there are a number of variables. So check out the websites and/or call the clinic and see if they will quote a price over the phone, then schedule a consultation. Back to my warning in the first paragraph. That nationwide chain will not quote prices over the phone or even at trade shows, they insist you come in for a consultation. Once you are in for a consultation you’ll get a very heavy sales pitch and you’ll be talked into a package, which they require to be paid in full up front. Once they have your money you’ll never be able to get it back. We have a number of clients who were sold a package from that chain and then found out how much they’d been over charged and were furious. They still complete the package there, but are coming to us for additional areas. For example they charge about $1,500 for a lip and chin package, we charge $225! You can see why they won’t quote prices or give refunds.

Sugaring is a method of epilation that is similar to waxing, and, for that reason, is “often called sugar
waxing or Persian waxing.”
It has been in use since 1900 BC, “when a hairless and smooth body was considered the standard of youth, beauty and innocence for women in Egypt.” Nowadays Islam rules the removal of armpit and pubic hair.”
Sugaring can be less painful than waxing, because the substrate sticks to the hair without attaching to the skin, may be applied at room temperature or heated to a lukewarm temperature, preventing burning. Nevertheless, there is some risk of skin irritation, sensitivity, and reaction. One website advises, “Of course it hurts to pull out hair however you do it, but many find sugaring less painful than waxing.”
Substrate
Sugaring paste can be prepared with common household food items, such as water, sugar and lemon juice, and cornstarch, honey or molasses.
Getting the consistency correct takes some practice for most users.
Pre-made sugar paste is also sold under many brand names, and both professional and retail versions are available. It may contain guar gum in addition to the other ingredients.
Some salons state that sugaring is preferable to waxing, because the former has no resins, except for guar.
Since the sugar solution is water-based and water-soluble, sugaring is easily cleaned up with warm water.
Process
In sugaring, either a “heated sugar mixture” can be covered with a strip of fabric, or spread directly on the skin.
With the strip method, the area to be epilated is typically dusted with powder (commercial or corn starch) prior to application of the sugaring solution, which is spread on with a spatula, tongue depressor, or by hand. After the sticky paste is applied to the skin in the opposite direction of hair growth. A strip of porous cloth or paper is pressed into the preparation, and “lifted” or “zip[ped] off” in the same direction of hair growth, taking hairs with it.
Alternately, the paste is rolled onto the skin, and flicked off by hand in the natural direction of growth.
Does it hurt?
Yes! Like waxing the hair is ripped out of the folicles and yes it hurts. Look at the poor guys face in the picture above.

Athletes put their skin through more and are exposed to the elements (i.e., sun, wind, rain, chlorine)
more than sedentary people. Athletes are consistently sweating, training and showering, which leads to excessive loss of moisture to the skin and hair. Most city water systems contain chlorine; once the pores are opened from a warm shower or bath, the skin absorbs chlorine like a sponge. Chlorinated water can cause or exacerbate dry skin and rashes, and the inhaled steam can aggravate sinuses and lungs.
But chlorine is not the only chemical of concern. Adults put up to 126 unique chemicals on their skin each day, and up to 60 percent of what is put on the skin is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. One of every five adults are potentially exposed every day to all of the top seven carcinogenic impurities common to personal care product ingredients: hydroquinone, ethylene dioxide, 1,4-dioxane, formaldehyde, nitrosamines, PAHs, and acrylamide. The top most common impurity ranked by number of people exposed is hydroquinone, which is a potential contaminant in products used daily by 94 percent of all women and 69 percent of all men. Although these exposures may be small, they add up within the body. How do these affect an athlete’s performance in the long run?
With the recent crop of media attention about chemicals in drinking water, lead levels in cosmetics and phthalates showing up everywhere, more athletes (whatever their performance level) are looking for an organic and natural approach to personal care products. This goes hand-in-hand with their already diligent approach to their exercise, food and supplement regimen.
Another good reason why athletes should also be using our Sense Beautiful Science skin care line in addition to other selected USANA nutritional products.

There seem to be may misconceptions about what the preparation is for Laser Hair Removal treatments. Below is the preferred protocol:
Clients scheduled for hair removal should avoid electrolysis,
tweezing, depilatories, or waxing for several weeks prior to treatments. If possible, don’t shave the day of the treatment; this will let the technician see the growth area. The technician will shave the area prior to treatment. Your skin should be thoroughly cleaned and dried, removing any makeup, cream, deodorant, or oils on the skins surface for treatment. What we need is to have the hair in the follicle so it can absorb the laser’s energy. I you pluck or wax, the hair won’t be in the
follicle and the laser will be useless. Also, unlike waxing, you don’t need any hair growth. The hair can be flush with the skin. So shaving between treatments is
preferred. You should also avoid tanning in the weeks prior to treatment. If you are out in the sun, keep the area to be treated covered and/or use SPF25+ sun block.
If you have had a history of cold sores (perioral herpes) and are scheduled for facial hair treatment, prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed. The key to stress here is that if you have EVER had cold sores, then let then you’ll need to take the antiviral therapy for several days before each treatment, otherwise you may experience an outbreak of cold sores.

Many people want to show off their newly hairless body with a beautiful tan, but please want until you are done with all the treatments. Lasers and tanned skin don’t go well together.
People with tanned skin have been generally discouraged from traditional laser hair removal treatments because tanning changes their natural skin pigmentation. During a laser hair removal procedure, light energy is directed to the skin where the unwanted hair is located. The skin absorbs some of the laser energy before it reaches the hair follicles. How much energy is absorbed will be determined by the skin color. Tanned skin will usually absorb excess amounts of light energy and can cause burning or discoloration after treatment. Therefore, to treat a tanned patient, the laser energy must be turned down to prevent burning. This, in turn, decreases the effectiveness of the light energy to kill unwanted hair follicles.
Even using sunless tanning lotions will have the same effect.
You should also avoid sun expose for a week or two after a laser hair removal treatment as this can cause easier burning since the laser treatment gives a slight sunburn effect (but without the UVA or UVB dangers.). If you do go out in the sun put on at least SPF 30 sunscreen.
So for your best laser hair removal experience and results we recommend avoiding tanning the area being treated and limit sun exposure and always use a SPF 30+ sunscreen.
What we recommend to our clients is a mineral based sunscreen which is free of paraben or formaldehyde releasing preservatives. ColoreScience produces such a sunscreen which works very well. Please contact us, Bella Pelle Laser for more information on this product line or the Sense preservative free skin care line as well.

A study reported in Cancer Research (May 2009) showed that those individuals with prostate cancer had a better chance of survival if they were taking vitamin E supplementation. Those prostate cancer patients who had the highest levels of vitamin E had a 33% lower risk of dying from their prostate cancer when compared to those who had the lowest levels of vitamin E. In fact, the group of men who had prostate cancer and actually took vitamin E supplements had a 50% decreased risk of dying from their prostate cancer when compared to the group with the lowest risk of prostate cancer.
I believe that we all should be taking nutritional supplements and providing our bodies with cellular nutrition. However, if you have any form of cancer, the medical evidence is very strong that you will tolerate your treatments better and respond better to those treatments, if you are taking high-quality, complete and balanced nutritional supplements. Vitamin E being just one of those nutrients that needs to be supplemented.
